SPIDERS

Spiders make up the largest group of arachnids, and in North America alone, there are more than 3,000 species of spiders. As arachnids, spiders have eight legs and two body segments, but unlike most insects, they lack both wings and antennae. They are predators and feed on nuisance insects, flies, moths, and other spiders; they do not feed on plants. Spiders very eco-important as they help to control insect populations.

Are spiders dangerous?

Spiders are shy and reclusive by nature, so contact with a spider usually only occurs accidentally. Most species of spiders living in our area are nuisance spiders and pose no real harm to residents; they actually help to limit the number of insects living in our yards. However, this is not to say that all spiders are harmless. Some species are dangerous because their venom is strong enough to trigger an allergic reaction.

Where will I find spiders?

When spiders are living outside, they build their webs or burrows in a variety of places, preferring locations that are dark and secluded to keep them out of the view of people and predators. Tall grasses, gardens, bushes, shrubs, and trees make excellent places for web-building spiders to build their webs; those spiders that burrow do so under woodpiles, fallen trees, bushes, and rocks. Spiders will move into homes and other buildings when seeking a safe place to lay their eggs or to feed on those insects that have also made their way inside.

How can I prevent spiders in the future?

In addition to our home and commercial pest control services, keep your property free of spiders using the following tips:

  • Cut back overgrown trees, shrubs, and vegetation from your home’s exterior.

  • Replace any torn or loose screens and place weatherstripping around doors and windows.

  • Inside your home, keep storage areas clutter-free and organized.

  • Don’t use cardboard boxes to store items, use plastic containers with locking lids.

ANTS

Living together in large groups, ants are social insects that can take over any property. They are a common pest and easily identified by their three body segments, six legs, and bent antennae. Only the reproductive members of an ant colony have wings. An ant colony consists of three different groups or “castes”: workers, males, and queens. Workers (sterile females) make up the bulk of the colony.

Are ants dangerous?

Most species of ants pose no significant harm to people or property. But, some species of dangerous ants do cause structural damage (carpenter ants), spread disease (Pharaoh ants), or bite and sting (fire ants). No matter the species of ant, one thing is sure, they should not be living in your yard or home where they can become a big annoyance, a potential danger, or contaminate food sources.

Where will I find ants?

Ants live in both indoor and outdoor locations. They typically build their main nesting site outside and often build satellite nests inside, near sources of food. Here are some common areas you will find ants, broken down by species:

  • Fire ants prefer to nest outside in open, sunny areas. Yards, athletic fields, parks, and golf courses make great nesting spots for fire ants.

  • Rover ants live near areas of moisture and thrive in urban areas, nesting under mulch, leaf litter, and piles of trash. Inside these ants like to nest behind the walls of bathrooms and kitchens.

  • Pavement ants nest outside in the soil next to foundations, sidewalks, walkways, and driveways. Inside they nest in ground-level masonry walls, inside of insulation, and behind walls.

  • Pharaoh ants like to nest indoors. They place their nests in warm, humid areas behind walls, baseboards, and under floors, traveling through buildings using its wires and pipes.

How can I prevent ants in the future?

In addition to our home and commercial pest control services, keep your property free of ants with the following tips:

  • Seal up cracks in the foundation of your property and in your driveway.

  • Make sure window and door screen are entirely intact.

  • Seal spaces around wires and pipes that are entering into your home.

  • Keep food in the refrigerator or airtight containers, not out in the open on counters or tables.

  • Remove fallen trees, tree stumps, logs, and other debris from your yard.

However, there are a few larger species of centipedes that can deliver a more potent bite, which can be painful and cause more significant reactions.

Where will I find centipedes?

Centipedes typically prefer moist outdoor environments such as gardens, flower beds, under rocks, logs, and leaf litter. Centipedes are often found in areas with ample prey, such as other insects or small invertebrates. They may hide in cracks, crevices, or areas with clutter or stored items.
