RODENTS

Rodents are a group of mammals characterized by their continuously growing incisor teeth. They belong to the order Rodentia, one of the largest mammal orders. Rodents include species such as mice, rats, squirrels, beavers, guinea pigs, and hamsters. They are found in various habitats and can be both beneficial and problematic.

Are rodents dangerous?

While not all rodents are inherently dangerous, some can pose risks to human health and property. Here's are a few of the potential dangers:

  • Disease Transmission: Certain rodents can carry and transmit diseases to humans through direct contact, bites, or contamination of food and surfaces. Examples include rats carrying diseases like leptospirosis, hantavirus, and salmonellosis.

  • Property Damage: Rodents have strong teeth that continuously grow, leading them to gnaw on various materials. This behavior can cause damage to structures, wiring, pipes, and stored items, leading to potential hazards such as electrical fires.

Where will I find rodents?

Rodents are found in various locations, especially where suitable breeding sites and environments exist. They seek shelter and safe places to build their nests. Cluttered areas, piles of debris, overgrown vegetation, and stored items provide ideal hiding spots and nesting sites for rodents.

How can I prevent rodents in the future?

In addition to our home and commercial pest control services, keep your property free of rodents using the following tips:

  • Keep all food stored in tightly sealed containers, including pet food. Clean up food spills promptly and avoid leaving food out.

  • Regularly clean floors, countertops, and other surfaces to eliminate food crumbs and residues that can attract rodents.

  • Trim vegetation away from the exterior of your home, as overgrown shrubs and tree branches can provide easy access for rodents.

  • Dispose of trash regularly and ensure that outdoor garbage bins have tight-fitting lids.

MOSQUITOES

Mosquitoes are small flying insects belonging to the family Culicidae. They are known for their needle-like mouthparts that they use to pierce the skin of humans and animals to extract blood. Mosquitoes are found in various regions around the world, except in extremely cold climates.

Are mosquitoes dangerous?

While mosquitoes are not considered dangerous they do transmit diseases to humans and animals.

Where will I find mosquitoes?

Mosquitoes can be found in various locations, especially in areas with suitable breeding sites and environments. Mosquitoes are commonly found outdoors, particularly in areas with standing water such as ponds and stagnant pools. They tend to rest in shaded areas with vegetation, such as tall grass, bushes, and shrubs. Mosquitoes are more prevalent in warm and humid climates. Mosquitoes can be found in residential areas, especially if there are sources of standing water like bird baths, flower pots, clogged gutters, or poorly maintained swimming pools.

How can I prevent mosquitoes in the future?

In addition to our home and commercial pest control services, keep your property free of mosquitoes using the following tips:

  • Remove standing water from your property to eliminate mosquito breeding sites.

  • Maintain your yard by mowing the lawn, trimming vegetation, and removing debris.

  • Use mosquito repellents on exposed skin and clothing when spending time outdoors.

  • Wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants, socks, and closed-toe shoes to minimize exposed skin.

  • Install and maintain window and door screens to keep mosquitoes out of your home.

BED BUGS

Found living in every state in the U.S. and throughout most of the world, bed bugs are formidable pests that can take over any home or business. Bed bugs do not discriminate and will hitchhike their way into a mansion, apartment, or anywhere in-between. Bed bugs are oval-shaped bugs with mahogany-brown bodies. Adults grow to about 1/4 of an inch in length. They have elongated, piercing mouthparts (proboscis) that they use to feed on their hosts. After feeding, the bed bug’s appearance changes; its body swells and increases in size. They also turn a more purplish-red color.

Are bed bugs dangerous?

In most cases, bed bugs are nuisance pests, not dangerous pests. However, no one wants these biting insects in their home, and their presence tends to disrupt sleep. Bed bugs can acquire and spread human pathogens during the feeding process, but as of now, this is not a big concern. A more significant issue is that many are allergic to a protein found in bed bug saliva. Once bitten, a person that is allergic develops red welts that are itchy and uncomfortable. Excessive itching, especially in the case of children, may lead to secondary infections.

Where will I find bed bugs?

Bed bugs hide during the day in dark, secluded areas. Inside homes, bed bugs hide in the following locations:

  • In the seams of mattresses and box springs

  • In upholstered or wooden furniture

  • Behind outlets, wood trim or wall hangings

  • Inside wall voids or in wall cracks

  • Inside keyboards and electronics

How can I prevent bed bugs in the future?

In addition to our home and commercial pest control services, keep your property free of bed bugs using the following tips:

  • Reduce hiding spots in your home by placing bed bug proof covers over mattresses and box springs.

  • Avoid buying used mattresses, box springs, furniture, and even electronics.

  • When spending time in public, traveling, or while at work or school, always keep personal belongings away from other people’s things.

  • Keep personal belongings up off of the ground in any public place.

  • Regularly vacuum your home and wash bedding on a high heat cycle.

  • Newly purchased clothing should immediately be washed and dried on the highest heat setting the fabrics can handle.

CARPENTER ANTS / BEES

Carpenter ants are large ants that are known for their ability to excavate wood to create nests and galleries. Unlike termites, they do not eat wood but instead hollow it out to make their nests. Carpenter ants are attracted to moist and decaying wood, so they can be found in areas with water damage or damp environments. There are many species of ants living across the country, including fire ants, carpenter ants, ghost ants, rover ants, pavement ants, odorous house ants, Pharaoh ants, raspberry crazy ants, and Argentine ants.

Carpenter bees, on the other hand, are solitary bees that resemble bumblebees but have a shiny, hairless abdomen. They are called "carpenter" bees because they also excavate wood to create nests.

Are carpenter ants/bees dangerous?

Carpenter ants and bees are not inherently dangerous to humans, but they can pose certain risks and concerns. Here's a brief explanation:

  • Carpenter ants are not known to bite humans unless they feel threatened. However, they can cause structural damage to buildings and homes by hollowing out wood to create their nests. If left unchecked, extensive carpenter ant infestations can weaken wooden structures, potentially leading to costly repairs. Additionally, some people may experience allergic reactions to carpenter ant bites or the formic acid they spray as a defense mechanism, resulting in localized pain, redness, and swelling.

  • Carpenter bees, particularly the females, have the ability to sting but are generally not aggressive. Male carpenter bees, which are incapable of stinging, are more territorial and may act aggressively in defense of their nests. The primary concern with carpenter bees is the damage they can cause to wooden structures over time, as their nesting activities involve drilling holes into wood, potentially leading to cosmetic issues and structural weaknesses.

Where will I find carpenter ants/bees?

Carpenter ants and bees can be found in various locations, depending on their nesting preferences and environmental conditions. Here's a short explanation of where you might encounter them:

  • Carpenter ants are commonly found in areas with damp or decaying wood.

  • Homes and buildings with water damage or leaks, especially in wooden structures like window frames, door frames, and attics.

  • Outdoor areas with rotting tree stumps, logs, or wooden fences.

  • Carpenter bees typically nest in softwoods, particularly unpainted or weathered wood. They can be found in various locations, including:

  • Wooden structures like eaves, decks, and porches.

How can I prevent carpenter ants/bees in the future?

In addition to our home and commercial pest control services, keep your property free of carpenter ants and bees using the following tips:

Carpenter Ants:

  • Seal and store food properly, especially sweet and sugary items, which are attractive to ants.

  • Keep tree branches, shrubs, and plants trimmed and away from your house, as they can serve as bridges for ants to access your home.

  • Seal cracks, gaps, and openings in your home's foundation, walls, and windows to prevent ants from entering.

Carpenter Bees:

  • Paint or varnish wooden surfaces: Apply a protective coating to wooden structures, as carpenter bees are less likely to burrow into painted or varnished wood.

  • Regular maintenance: Inspect and maintain wooden structures, fences, and outdoor furniture to identify and address any signs of damage or potential nesting sites.

GERMAN ROACHES

German roaches are considered pests due to their ability to contaminate food, trigger allergies, and spread bacteria and pathogens. They have been known to cause gastrointestinal and respiratory issues in humans, particularly in individuals with asthma or allergies. Infestations can be challenging to eliminate, as these roaches reproduce quickly and have developed resistance to many common insecticides.

Are german roaches dangerous?

German roaches, while not inherently dangerous in the sense of being physically harmful or venomous, can pose risks and have negative impacts on human health and hygiene.

Where will I find german roaches?

German roaches are commonly found in areas where they can easily access food, water, and shelter. Remember that German roaches are nocturnal and tend to stay hidden during the day, so it's important to thoroughly inspect potential hiding places to detect their presence.

How can I prevent german roaches in the future?

In addition to our home and commercial pest control services, keep your property free of german roaches using the following tips:

  • Practice good sanitation by keeping your home clean and eliminating potential food and water sources. Clean up spills and crumbs promptly, store food in sealed containers, and regularly empty trash cans.

  • Declutter your living spaces, as roaches thrive in areas with hiding spots. Remove piles of paper, cardboard, and unused items.

  • Inspect your home for cracks, gaps, and openings that may serve as entry points for roaches. Seal them using caulk, weatherstripping, or other appropriate materials to prevent roaches from entering.

  • Fix any plumbing leaks and ensure that areas prone to moisture, such as bathrooms and kitchens, are well-ventilated.

Fleas are small, wingless insects that are known for their jumping ability. They have flattened bodies that allow them to move easily through fur or feathers. Fleas are typically brown or reddish-brown in color and measure about 1 to 4 millimeters in length. While there are several species of fleas, the most common type that affects humans and pets is the cat flea (Ctenocephalides felis).

Are fleas & ticks dangerous?

Yes, fleas and ticks can be considered dangerous due to the various health risks they pose to humans and animals. Once attached, ticks insert their mouthparts into the skin and feed on blood. Flea bites can cause itching, redness, and irritation in humans and animals. Some individuals may develop allergic reactions to flea saliva, leading to more severe symptoms such as intense itching, rash, and even dermatitis. While fleas are primarily known for causing discomfort, they can also transmit diseases to humans and animals such as Lyme disease.

Where will I find fleas & ticks?

Fleas and ticks can be found in various locations. Fleas often reside on cats, dogs, and other pets. They can infest the fur of your pets and lay their eggs in bedding and blankets. Flea larvae and eggs can be found deep within the fibers of carpets and rugs. They tend to stay hidden in protected areas until they develop into adult fleas. Ticks, in particular, are commonly found in tall grass, bushes, and overgrown areas. They climb onto low-lying vegetation, waiting to attach themselves to passing hosts. Ticks are prevalent in wooded areas where they can latch onto animals or humans as they pass by.

How can I prevent fleas & ticks in the future?

In addition to our home and commercial pest control services, keep your property free of fleas and ticks using the following tips:

  • Consult with a veterinarian to choose and consistently use appropriate flea and tick preventive products for your pets. These can include topical treatments, collars, oral medications, or spot-on treatments.

  • Inspect your pets regularly for signs of fleas and ticks, especially after outdoor activities. Use a fine-toothed comb to comb through your pet's fur, paying attention to areas such as the neck, armpits, and groin.

WASPS & HORNETS

Wasps are stinging insects and formidable pests that can use their smooth stingers to deliver multiple, painful stings when threatened. Most species of wasps have a pinched waist, two pairs of wings, and six legs that hang down when they fly. The majority of wasps are predatory and hunt species of garden pests, spiders, and other insects to feed their developing larvae. Their predatory nature helps to control populations of nuisance insects. Adult wasps feed on pollen and nectar and are responsible for some pollination.

Are wasps dangerous?

Wasps that live outside, away from people, are not dangerous pests; they are a welcome and much-needed part of the ecosystem. However, when wasps decide to nest close to where we live or work, they become unwelcome intruders. The closer a wasp colony places their nest to your home or a high traffic area of your yard, the more likely it is that you, your kids, or pets will be stung.

Where will I find wasps?

Wasps are either social or solitary. Most social species of wasps place their nests up off the ground. Those species that are solitary build their nests in the ground, either digging a burrow themselves or using the abandoned nest of another small animal. Wasps are most active in the late summer and fall when their colony is at its largest size, and workers are out in large numbers foraging for food. Workers fly around our yards, gardens, trees, and other vegetation searching for food to feed themselves and colony.

How can I prevent wasps in the future?

In addition to our home and commercial pest control services, keep your property free of wasps using the following tips:

  • Fill holes in your yard and remove tree stumps, fallen trees, and other debris that wasps could nest in.

  • Trim tree branches back from the outside of your house.

  • Make sure outdoor trash cans and compost bins have tight-fitting lids.

  • Limit the number of flowering plants on your property.

  • Place a tight cap on your chimney.
